چکیده

We define cardiomyokines as heart-derived secreted proteins that affect cardiovascular function via autocrine, paracrine and/or endocrine mechanisms. The subject of this review is the cardiomyokine, mesencephalic astrocyte-derived neurotrophic factor (MANF). The expression of MANF is increased in the ischemic heart, in part, through activation of ER stress, a condition that drastically impairs the expression and secretion of most cardiomyokines. This novel function of MANF suggests that it may have important roles in the ER stressed, ischemic heart. Consistent with this are recent findings showing that MANF protects against ischemic damage, and that it is anti-hypertrophic. Accordingly, in light of its function as a potentially secreted cardiomyokine, MANF has translational potential as a novel therapy for ischemic heart disease. This article is part of a special issue entitled "Key Signaling Molecules in Hypertrophy and Heart Failure."

Lactobacillus Paracasei Has Anti-Inflammatory Effect on the Heart Failure Induced by Isoproterenol in Rats

Background: Heart failure (HF) has become one of the most prevalent cardiovascular problems worldwide. Considering the beneficial effects of probiotics on human health, we aimed to investigate the anti-inflammatory effect of oral administration of Lactobacillus paracasei in HF induced by isoproterenol. Methods: Forty Wistar male rats weighing 80g on average were randomly assigned to five grou...

Resveratrol Provides Cardioprotection after Ischemia/reperfusion Injury via Modulation of Antioxidant Enzyme Activities

In this study, we investigated the cardioprotective effects of resveratrol. Rats were intraperitoneally administered with resveratrol (25 mg/kg bw) or vehicle (ethanol 10%) for 7 days and their heart subjected to ischemia/reperfusion injury. Isolated hearts were langendorff perfused, left ventricular functions as heart rate and developed pressure, as well as, heart antioxidant status were deter...

The role of natriuretic peptides in cardioprotection.

Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and brain (B-type) natriuretic peptide (BNP) are circulating hormones of cardiac origin that play an important role in the regulation of intravascular blood volume and vascular tone. The plasma concentrations of ANP and BNP are elevated in heart failure, and they are considered to compensate for heart failure because of their diuretic, natriuretic, and vasodilat...

Cardioprotection by vanadium compounds targeting Akt-mediated signaling.

Treatment with inorganic and organic compounds of vanadium has been shown to exert a wide range of cardioprotective effects in myocardial ischemia/reperfusion-induced injury, myocardial hypertrophy, hypertension, and vascular diseases. Furthermore, administration of vanadium compounds improves cardiac performance and smooth muscle cell contractility and modulates blood pressure in various model...
